INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD INDIGENOUS PEOPLE CELEBRATED ON THE 9TH AUGUST.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is observed every year to promote and protect the rights of indigenous people an (9 August) and also to improve on issues such as (environmental protection), the event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve worlds issues such as tourism. It was first proclaimed by the General Assembly of the UN in December 1994, to be celebrated every year. The indigenous peoples must be part of the new development agenda in order for it to succeed. Together, let us recognize and celebrate the valuable and distinctive identities of indigenous peoples around the world. Let us work even harder to empower them and support their aspirations. It is for this reason that Green Cameroon would love everyone to join in celebrating this special day because we all belong to an indigenous group so we should be able to know the rights we all process as human beings.
The theme for this year is “BRIDGING THE GAP; IMPLEMENTING THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE” The theme aims to highlight the importance of implementing the rights of indigenous peoples through policies and programs at both the national and international levels working together towards this common goal with Governments, the United Nations system, indigenous peoples and other stakeholders.
It should be noted that it is not a public holiday and people are encouraged to participate in observing the day to spread the UN’s massage on indigenous people and activities may involve Education Forum and Classroom Activities to gain an appreciation and a better understanding of indigenous people.
